The demands for a safe, clean production environment may require the use of air as a test medium, instead of oil. However, correlating the test results using air (a compressible fluid) to performance data using oil is particularly difficult. Furthermore, variable displacement pumps, with solenoid or pressure actuated eccentric rings, are particularly challenging to validate using air.
