Systems Engineer

Company Overview

At Advanced Test and Automation, we enable safer transportation for everyone. How? We provide highly automated testing systems for vehicle components that improve efficiency and safety, while reducing cost, recalls and emissions. Our systems are used by manufacturers worldwide to validate and continuously improve their designs and their production lines for absolute quality assurance.

Key Responsibilities

At Advanced Test and Automation (ATA), the Systems Engineer is the connection between the mechanical, electrical, and software segments of the ATA test systems. The systems Engineer will develop the architectures based on high-level definition of process inputs and outputs and ensure the smooth integration of key deliverables from each functional discipline to form a fully functional, cohesive, manufacturable solution.

To thrive in this role, the Systems Engineer will be persistent, reliable, punctual, and systematic in how they engage and execute various phases. In ensuring successful delivery of various fluid power test products and services, the Systems Engineer will be working with other Research & Development Engineers, Test Engineers, Millwrights, Electricians, Procurement Specialists and Order Managers.

The Systems Engineer acts as a key technical member within the company, living our values and working with other peers to make decisions in the best interests of ATA and our customers.

Role Requirements

  • Develop detailed functional specifications for mechanical, electrical, and software segments of ATA test systems based on high-level definition of process inputs and outputs. Ensure smooth integration of key deliverables from each functional discipline to form a fully functional, cohesive, manufacturable solution.

  • Deliver technical solutions within target budgets and timelines for each functional module, to ensure project profitability.

  • Execute and/or review necessary engineering calculations to support product selection and recommendation (mechanical, hydraulic, thermal, electrical, etc) based on meeting the requirements outlined in global test standards.

  • Initiate, lead, and document component selection initiatives based on engineering calculation and model outputs, for product and test service offerings.

  • Review and provide feedback on conceptual and detailed 3D mechanical designs created in Solidworks for ATA test equipment.

  • Review and provide feedback on dimensioning, tolerancing and material selection on 2D engineering drawings for customized system components.

  • Review and provide feedback on electrical drawings, including three-phase power systems, low voltage controls, analog instrumentation, data acquisition systems, etc.

  • Develop flow charts and/or pseudocode for system control algorithms, and review functional layout developed in NI LabVIEW.

  • Proactively identify potential challenges and risks that could affect the implementation of a new functional module, product, or service.

  • Provide input for maintaining a list of standard test procedures within the company’s internal database.

  • Lead prototype validation initiatives to de-risk component and/or module functionality, for product and/or test service offerings.

  • Drive value engineering initiatives to optimize costs and increase reliability of ATA functional modules.

  • Support R&D engineering in translating customer needs into a manufacturable product, participate in product architecture planning, and provide input during concept design.

  • Support R&D engineering in development of concept mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic schematics, and definition of subsystem modules.

  • Support R&D engineering in development of software test sequence logic.

  • Provide input and ideas for cost optimization of existing products.

  • Lead and document product and process FMEA studies for new designs.

  • Attend internal Project Kick-off Meetings to ensure alignment between product features and customer deliverables.

  • Work with Project Management to provide inputs in creation of Project Schedules, including work breakdown structures, time estimates, and risk identification.

  • Assist in maintaining accurate records (work breakdown structure, time estimate, duration, resource allocation) within ATA project management tools

  • Create, review and maintain Bill of Materials documents, including interpretation and validation of product configuration sheets.

  • Participate in system build and functionality quality control, by working together with Quality & Services Manager and Engineering Technicians.

  • Participate in product test data analysis, prepare and/or review test reports, and assist with data interpretation.

ATA’s 3 Core Values

  1. NOW is the time- We act with anticipation and purpose. We believe there’s no time like the present to make an impact and to set a new standard for ourselves and the industry. We like to defy the odds when others think it can’t be done.

  2. I will communicate, not hide- We value honesty, accountability, and dependability. We do not shy away from difficult subjects. In our commitments to the team, our customers, our suppliers, and our partners we care personally while challenging directly.

  3. I will create, not accept - We focus on improvement and innovation.  We challenge ourselves to develop the best technology for the task at hand rather than make do with what’s currently available.  We constantly look for ways to do better, for leading-edge technology, for the next advances.
